AbstractSore throat, also known as pharyngitis, is characterised by pain, scratchiness or irritation of the throat which often worsens with swallowing. Most sore throats are caused by viral infections and pass in three to seven days. Some sore throats are caused by a bacterial infection and fever may be present. Antibiotic therapy may be required to treat bacterial pharyngitis.
